Our Sanctuary was designed by the architect Theophulus Parsons Chandler (1845 - 1928). He was born in Boston and graduated from Harvard Architectural School with further studies in Paris. His work shows a preoccupation with English architectural precedent, particularly rural English medieval churches. All of his churches have these characteristics. Chandler leaned toward this style because of his preference for stone and its compatibility with lithic architecture.Secondly, Chandler's style represented nature. His English country churches displayed a relationship to their natural surroundings that complimented the landscape. The gargoyle on the tower is representative of medieval architecture, also. The church was built by Joseph Ashby at a cost of $12,000.
The original floor plan of the Sanctuary has been modified several times. In 1884, the pulpit was placed on the west side, the organ on the south, and the entrance on the east side. In 1911, the pulpit and organ were moved to the north and west sides, respectively. In 1916, another change was made, moving both the pulpit and the organ to the south side, where they remain today. In 1921, an entrance was added to the north side. The current floor plan was established in 1966, allowing for seating in the transept, or side room, a space previously used for Sunday School classes. The 1966 renovation also provided us with a narthex at the north entrance, and choir rooms behind the chancel.
The church grounds have also experienced several changes over the years. A shed to accommodate horses and carriage was built in 1913 at a cost of $76.50. A barn stood on the property for many years, providing a place for the youth of the neighborhood to enjoy fellowship events. A Sunday School building was dedicated in 1916, and served our congregation until its demolition in 1972. The Christian Education Building that stands today was built the same year, for the purpose of serving both the congregation and our neighbors. It is currently used for Sunday School classes, committee meetings, fellowship events, Alcoholics Anonymous, voting, Girl Scouts, Leisure Club, Red Cross blood drives, and our Nursery School, to name just a few.
